Using Savewhere

Savewhere brings saved items from supported sources into one private Source Library. This guide explains the current prototype behavior, including filtering, syncing, imports, and the browser extension.

Source Library Basics

  • Open Help Guide from the left sidebar in the Savewhere app when you need workflow instructions or FAQ answers.
  • The Source Library shows saved items from every connected or imported source.
  • Use the search bar to search titles, creators, source names, excerpts, notes, and tags.
  • Click a source card in the left menu, such as YouTube or Instagram, to filter the library to that source.
  • Click Source Library in the left menu to return to all sources.
  • The Source Library badge shows the total number of saved items. Each source card shows that source's count. If you capture new items from the browser extension, returning to the Savewhere tab refreshes these counts.
  • Saved item cards open the original platform item when clicked.

Connecting Sources

  • YouTube imports public and private playlists that your connected Google account allows Savewhere to read.
  • Reddit imports saved posts and comments after Reddit OAuth is connected and approved.
  • Pinterest imports boards and pins after Pinterest OAuth is connected and approved.
  • X bookmarks are treated as a Pro connector because X API access may require a paid X developer plan.
  • Instagram currently uses official export files and browser-extension capture because Instagram does not expose saved posts through a normal consumer OAuth API.

Instagram Import

  • Use Instagram's official data export flow and download the saved posts JSON file.
  • In Savewhere, choose Instagram, open the import guide, and upload the exported JSON file.
  • Export data is useful for getting the list of saved URLs, but it may not include rich captions or thumbnails.

Browser Extension

  • The extension captures visible saved-item metadata from pages you are already viewing.
  • For Instagram backfill, open the Instagram saved posts page or a saved collection, click Start scan, scroll through that saved grid, then click Save collected items.
  • Instagram rolling scan is intentionally blocked on the home feed, Explore, Reels, profiles, and normal post pages because visible posts there are not necessarily saved.
  • Instagram unloads older grid items as you scroll, so Savewhere remembers items while they pass through the page instead of expecting all items to remain loaded.
  • The extension badge shows how many items the current rolling scan has seen.
  • Automatic Instagram capture listens for Save and Unsave clicks on Instagram pages when enabled.
  • Save clicks add or update the item in Savewhere. Unsave clicks hide that item from normal Savewhere results.
  • If Instagram opens the collection picker when you hover over the bookmark icon, choose the collection normally. Savewhere remembers the post tied to that bookmark icon and captures it as soon as you press or click the collection name.
  • If a Save click does not appear in Savewhere, reload the extension in Chrome, refresh Instagram, and open the extension popup. The popup will show whether the latest Save click was detected or whether Savewhere could not find a post permalink.

Smart Collections

  • Smart Collections are a Pro feature.
  • They are generated from saved-item metadata after Savewhere has synced or imported enough items.
  • Free users should not see Smart Collections in the app navigation.

FAQ

Why do some Instagram cards have thumbnails but no caption?

Instagram's saved grid often loads thumbnails without the full post caption. Feed captures often expose the caption, while saved-grid captures may need the post opened before richer text is visible. Some feed videos do not expose a reusable image/poster URL, so Savewhere may use the already-loaded video URL as a preview when available. Savewhere does not store screenshot copies of third-party posts.

Why do I need to scroll Instagram after starting a scan?

Instagram lazy-loads and virtualizes the saved grid. Only a small window of posts exists in the page at one time. Start scan tells Savewhere to remember saved items as they appear while you scroll. Start scan should be used only on Instagram Saved pages or saved collections, not the general feed.

What happens if I unsave something on Instagram?

The extension sends an unsave event to Savewhere. Savewhere hides that item from normal results while preserving enough history to avoid accidental duplicate or stale sync issues.

Can Savewhere delete my data?

Yes. Disconnecting a source removes that source's local connection data and saved-item references. Future account settings should also include explicit export and delete controls.

Does Savewhere store my social media password?

No. OAuth sources use the platform's authorization screen, and import sources use official export files that you choose to upload.

Why is X behind Pro?

X bookmark access may require a paid X API plan. Savewhere keeps that connector behind a Pro feature flag so free users are not shown a feature that may carry ongoing platform cost.
